An independent research practice
The Basis Point publishes free research on Indian markets and takes on commissioned work to the same standard. Both get built the same way, from primary documents, with the assumptions left where you can see them.
Why this exists
Most market numbers in circulation were inherited, not measured. A figure turns up in a deck, gets quoted in a press release, gets picked up by a database, and two years later it is "the market size". By then nobody can say which document it came from or what was counted.
This works the other way round. Answering a question means going to the documents companies are legally required to file, reading them scheme by scheme or company by company, and adding up what is there. It is more work per figure than quoting one, and the numbers hold up when someone questions them.
What independent means here
Specifically, and in a way you can check:
- No vendor funding. Published reports are not sponsored, syndicated, or paid for by any party with an interest in the result.
- No syndicated data. Figures come from filings, regulatory disclosures and audited accounts, not from purchased market-research databases whose own sourcing you cannot inspect.
- Sources named. Every material figure in a report is attributed to a document you can retrieve yourself.
- Commissioned work is separated from published work. A client cannot buy a conclusion in a published report, and published research is never used as a sales instrument for a client's position.
The reports stay free. They exist to show the method in full, on real questions, at full length. Anyone thinking about commissioning work can read one first and judge the standard before paying for anything.
Who runs it
The Basis Point is run by Rajat Chitkara, who has three years of experience in market research.
The reason for starting it was straightforward. There are topics worth understanding properly, and waiting for someone to commission the work meant it never got done.
Work is delivered by a single analyst. That caps how many engagements can run at once, which is deliberate. It also means the person you speak to is the person reading the filings.
How the two halves fit together
The published reports are the portfolio and the commissioned services are the practice. You can read a full report end to end, check the numbers against the sources, and decide from that whether the method suits the decision you are trying to make.
